Battling depression

I have written about this topic before and I don't think I can wait until Thursday for those who need to read this. Today's shocking news about Sushant Singh makes us realize that yes anyone can go through this . Its very easy for us to be by standers and say he should have shared / he should have spoken. 1. A person who is going through has no clue what is going on .Its the near and dear ones who may first take notice of it . 2. The individual who is going through the depression is hardly in a position to accept the situation and seek help . So many times it is a collective effort. Whether the person likes it or not , he / she has to be pushed towards seeking professional help. The acceptance is difficult to say the least . 3. It is not just about talking to someone or having someone. It is also about physiological responses as much as the psychological. 4. Many of us equate depression with sadness. It cannot be equated to feeling low. It is a condition . I repeat it is is a co...

There is no parenting 101 manual

Add caption Parenting is probably one of the toughest tasks at hand  . You would never know if you are being a good parent, but you tried your best . You didn't fail. You just didn't know any better . You weren't given a Parenting 101 manual . I am not a parent, but from the place I am at , I believe I am in a position to emphatize with both the parent and the child . And there is always a catch 22. As a parent it is extremely challenging to deal with situations you weren't prepared for.  While we do know that we are doing our best , may be we need to change our approach. We cannot compare our childhoods and use them as a reference point . Respect doesn't mean your child should always give in. It also doesn't mean you are always right just because you were taught that a parent is always right . Children have a voice sometimes and they say things from a very different place. They don't realise it is going to hurt you. Do not let your ego define the rel...

Why is it so difficult to say no ?

How difficult is it to say NO.?. Why do some of us find it difficult to push the NO button ? You have been assigned a task ,you know the deliverable is not easy to accomplish but you still went ahead and said Yes. Did it make you in uncomfortable ? Yes it did, atleast a little. You have been invited to get together , you don't seem to like the host but you still go . Countless examples of how we have been conditioned to be conformists anyone who doesn't comply with norms becomes an outlier . We face these situations everyday and probably have never been made aware of the fact that sometimes we need to draw our own visible lines . We stick to people who make us uncomfortable and we feel horrible about but there are complex emotions attached . At the end of the day these weigh us down and ultimately manifest into anger, resentment frustration. It is indeed extremely difficult to draw your boundaries. But it is a process. Being vocal and telling someone that they are being a certa...

Just a slap ?

This post comes after me having recently watched the movie "Thappad". The slap in the movie is quite metaphorical to the situation of the protagonist. While a lot of people think that it wasn't a big deal , she is still shaken by repercussions of that one slap . While I was watching the film which covers the serious issue of domestic violence , I was wondering how many times we face this slap and try to make relationships or marriages work .While the film is largely women centric , it also made me think about the degrees of emotional abuse men are often subject to and live with it . While physical abuse is visible , emotional abuse is not . And this is the case with both the sexes . While this may be a larger issue for women with both these aspects , there may be a possibility that we seldom address the mens side of relationship trauma. It is true that we live in patriarchal society and men have always had the upper hand .But in their quest to be conditioned as not showin...

R.I.P Irfan .This was personal .

It's strange how much of a loss this is and how personal it feels. Never before have I felt at a loss of words for someone who I don't know personally . All we knew was through his movies . What a natural ! I don't remember the first time I  came across his movies. But I know that I have watched many of them because of the sheer brilliance he brought to the screen . What a big loss to the industry and to the world of cinema .We see the world through films some times and he had that unique ability to transform roles and allow us to feel the emotion exactly as it were felt. We are now left with so many beautiful movies that we will continue to cherish. Thank you for leaving behind so much of beauty. R.I.P Irfan . You were the finest.

Lockdown

Before the whole COVID-19 situation life was seemingly different . I had probably never heard of the term social distancing . The more real the situation becomes , reality hits . For many of us its a complete lifestyle change. No more social outings , no more parks , cooped up within the four walls of our house. We are on endless video calls , thanks to technology. People we haven't been in touch with are getting in touch either out of boredom or real care . Lets take a step back and look at the positives ; Some of us are looking inward - a lot of time to meditate and introspect. Some of us are connecting more so ever with family and friends. Some of us are taken back to childhood of our summer holidays where it was too hot to step out . Some of us are doing things we never did before . By the end of this we would be experts in cooking and innovating recipies . Try not to waste and make use of the resources we have . Life has become simple and minimalistic again. Many of us may hav...

Depression and Anxiety - what about it ?

I have been meaning to touch upon this topic for a while now . Is there a moment of your day that you end up feeling anxious or depressed over things ? In the past few weeks I have gone through a lot of content around this topic and thought I should share some insights . This is not a step by step formula or we are not even getting into solutioning a problem. I am sure there are many experts in this group and I am not qualified to talk about this topic. But I believe it is important for us to understand and debunk certain pre- conceived notions . In my own experience I have come across  people around us that  take depression very lightly and do not really understand that the person dealing with depression or anxiety needs help. Friends and family tend to brush it off by saying things - oh its a phase or its in your head or you are way to negative. or may be get a dog/ go for a drink / take a holiday . What people at large,  fail to understand is that each of us have had a...
